Planting & Care
1. Planting: Start by choosing an area with full sun (at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily) and well-drained soil ā the Red Prince is adaptable to nearly any type, as long as thereās no standing water, and it will adapt to some shade. When youāre ready to plant, dig a hole large enough to accommodate your plantās roots, place your tree and back fill the soil and then water to settle the roots.
2. Watering: Water your Red Prince regularly during the first growing season, or about once per week. You may need to water more often during times of extreme heat. But if youāre not sure when to water your Weigela, however, simply check the soil about 2 to 3 inches down ā if the soil is dry here, itās time to water.
3. Pruning: Pruning is not necessary for your Red Prince Weigela ā simply space your plantings to allow your Weigela to grow naturally. If you want a more formal appearance, prune annually after the second flowering period at the end of summer.
4. Fertilizer: Fertilize your Red Prince with a slow-release solution before new growth begins in the spring.
